I have lived in Wells for a number of years and heard a comment that there used to be 99 pubs in Wells, Somerset. I decided to try to find them. During my search of historic records, I also became interested in how the main shopping areas had changed over the years so I collected that as well.
The initial research was done in 2008 and I had it on a website (with photos for each building) but unfortunately this site was hacked and I lost almost everything. I managed to keep some of the information and have used my old source documents to fill in the bits I had lost.
One of the main problems I had was that, over the years, the streets and configuration of the buildings have changed. I have tried to place each historic building as close as possible within the current building configuration.
I would love to be able to virtually walk up the high street in eg 1859 .... I have the information and some photographs but it is WAY beyond my skills (and time) to do this.
Information collected from places such as censuses, tourist guide adverts, town records, Pigot's Directory, Kelly Directory, records at Taunton Library, records at Bishops Palace and locals knowledge. All of the source information was on the previous website but were lost when the site was hacked.
Apologies for any errors. Please let me know if anything needs to be changed, deleted or added by messaging me on Face book.
I hope you enjoy.
